In Belgium 2005 Journal Part Two

Day 2 Friday

Rolled out of bed around 4:30pm. Got on the ichat and had a video conference with my Mom and Pop. It was a trip. Apple kicks so much ass! SATAN!

Bart went out and picked up some fries and sausage, a Belgian treat. For me it means a gas disaster waiting to happen. After the chow (which was very tasty and very healthy) we had to go into Brussels so I could do an interview and play a DJ set on Belgium's largest radio station. (which means there are 1000 listeners! I'm joking)

At the station the people once again were super nice. They even handed me a beer when I walked into the studio. How sweet. Then their techy guy got a boner over Final Scratch as we plgged it in to their DJ rig. "How does it work?", "How does it work?" he kept asking. I said there are some things I understand in this world and a boatload more I don't. This is one of those things, I don't. The interview went great and my dj set was pimp. 1 down 1 to go...

Clues and the Devil

Chris Klooz is the owner of the bar known as Clues. This guy once got so drunk and stoned he decided to drive his van in a lake to see if it would float. According to all that know and love Chris, this is just one of many stories. You could easily believe them just by being in his presence.

We arrived at Clues around 12:15am and I was scheduled to play at 12:30 am. So with some sweet maneuvers and cat like reflexes I had Final Scratch set and ready in the 15 minutes given. I asked Chris for a beer ( all I wanted all night-on the house) and he hands me a Duval. "Thanks Chris this is yummy beer!", I say. 3 Duvals later I found out that Duval means Devil. "YES!" Me being the Satan worshiper I am, I thought that was really cool. What's not cool is it's called Devil because its 8.5% alcohol! Fuck me... Needless to say I had to switch to regular beer even though I love the Devil. (see attached photo above, 3 duvals throwing the horns, looking very faded)

The set went great. I played from 12:30am to about 6:30am. I earned my money man. I fucked em up too. For the first 3 hours I didn't play a single House or Techno record. It was like Studio 54 in the tiny bar that night. Disco till you puke. (for some that shouldn't take long) I opened with "Nature Boy" and closed with "You Are My Starship". If that doesn't put the Scotty F stamp on it, I don't know what would. Stay tuned for Day 3...

The Four Agreements (Wisdom Book)

by Don Miguel Ruiz

This book is based on the ancient Toltec teachings of southern Mexico. Its along the same lines as the Carlos Castaneda books but less magical and more strait forward. The author, Don Miguel Ruiz shares with the reader Toltec wisdom that can lead to a more fulfilling life. The book discusses how our own self-limiting beliefs can stop happiness and freedom and how a change of attitude can help fix the problem. I really liked the book due to it being filled with some good positive ideas as opposed to dogmatic drivel. If you like Castaneda, Native American philosophy, Buddhism, or other things of this nature, I recommend this book. Also if you feel negative, hate life, or constantly blame others for your unhappiness, you may want to take a look at it too.

Gravid Digital Video "I Can't Be Without You"

This is the first video for the new minimal techno label I have started with Keith Kemp. Included on the first Gravid Digital release is the track "I Can't Be Without You" produced by myself, with remixes by Keith Kemp and Luke Hess. The video was filmed in Los Angeles, edited in Detroit, the music was mastered in San Francisco, and the post production was completed in Southfield, Michigan. It took a lot of hard work and a lot of great people to get this project completed. Here you can view a low resolution version of the finished product. Gravid Digital will concentrate more on experimentation with different forms of digital media.

In Belgium 2005 Journal Part One

I'm going to share with you a short journal I kept during my first DJ tour in Belgium. I was sending the journel out as short emails to family and friends. I figured now I'll let you have at it. I'll be breaking it up into small parts that I post once a week with a picture or two included.

(I returned to Belgium in March of 2006 to do another small DJ tour and I will share those journal entries when this one ends.) Here we go...

WARNING: I use a lot of obscenities! If you are under the age of 18 stop reading this NOW!

HEY, I said stop now...

3.19.05
Belgium is good. I made it here with no problems. Everyone I've met has been nothing but nice. Especially the promoter who brought me in.

Day 1 Thursday

I arrived on Thursday and by about 4:30 pm I had met up with Bart (promoter) and we were off and running. We first went to Clues to meet the owner, see the setup for Friday night, and have a beer or two. (Here I was introduced to the Devil...more later) Clues is a tiny dive bar that holds maybe 100 people if you're lucky. I had never been more excited to play somewhere. The owner was right out of a movie. I think he made me laugh 3 to 400 times in my short visit at his bar.

Second we made a quick pit stop at the supermarket and then we headed for Decadance were Bart had to play. Bart dropped me off at his friend's apartment and then headed to the club. His friends were incredibly nice. We had drinks and wonderful conversation. After a couple of Aphex Twin albums and a few more drinks we set off to Decadance. (This was at about 11:30pm.)

Decadence is in Ghent and sits in the middle of a University Campus. Ghent is about 15 minutes outside of Brussels. The University must be something like Michigan State. Everywhere was a clusterfuck of shit-faced kids. At this point I was well on my way to being one of them.

After peeing on the side of a building I made my way into Decadence. Its actually a really nice place. I think you could squeeze around 5 to 600 people in it if you really had to. An old beautiful wood bar runs the length of the lower level. There is a nice wood staircase in the middle-back of the bar that leads to two balconies that rest on either side. (The nice old style ones with wood floors and wood railings. Like a whore house.)

The first dj was ok, the second was really really good technically but very much on the verge of trance. Then Bart got up and played a lot of Detroit/Chicago Techno and Acid house so I felt much better. By about 6:00 am I didn't feel better anymore. All I wanted was to get in a bed. The owner of Decadance let me sleep on a couch in the private apartment behind the club. So little Scotty went to sleepy. This was about 7:45 am. We didn't leave till 9:45am.

A Book A Week

I always wanted to have a section on the Ferrispark Records website dedicated to books. My passion for reading is as serious as my passion for music. In fact, many books that I read inspire the music I write. I've decided I'll post a book a week in my blog and give a little review and also my opinion of what makes it important. I hope you'll enjoy it.

The following is a little blurb that I originally wrote for the "Books" page on the FPR website...

This section of the website is devoted to acknowledging authors and their writings that I believe could be useful for broadening ones mind and creating a more introspective and excepting society.
One phenomena of being born an American is living in a very diverse and very young society created from thousands of ancient and modern cultural, religious, and philosophical ideas. One land shared by a society of millions with an infinite amount of individual and group perspective. The American people’s worldly knowledge became my best and most impressive teacher, plunging me into a sea of learning and ideologic exception.
Another, and much less impressive phenomena is that America with such diverse cultural, religious and personal ideas could be broken down into two categories, liberal democrats and conservative republicans. Too restrictive I think.
Many and most of the featured writings are considered to be of a liberal and democratic nature. I can assure you that I am both and I am neither. I’ve learned to acknowledge and embrace a plethora of personal ideas and beliefs. Democratic and Republican, Capitalist and Communist, Eastern and Western, Religious and Philosophical, and so on. The following books have helped expand and broaden my thinking process.

With that said lets start...

Catch - 22 by Joseph Heller

One of the funniest dark comedies every written. This is an antiwar book about a fictitious group of US bombers stationed on an island off the coast of Italy during WWII. The book focuses on the hypocrisy of the war machine and points out some absurdities in the rules of war and the hierarchy of commanding officers. Catch 22 even takes a stab at Capitalism through the greedy and sneeky character Milo. The book follows the main character Yossaian's story of life, love, and death during his tour of duty. Packed with unforgettable characters, Heller tells a very funny and witty story about a very sad reality. If you like to laugh at things that shouldn't necessarily be funny, I recommend this book.
